Scholastic Assessment Test

The Test of English Proficiency for Students entering Universities

What is SAT ?

The SAT is wholly owned, developed, and published by the College Board, a private, not-for-profit organization in the United States. It is administered on behalf of the College Board by the Educational Testing Service, which until recently developed the SAT as well. The SAT takes three hours to finish and as of 2019 costs US$49.50 (US$64.50 with the optional essay), excluding late fees, with additional processing fees if the SAT is taken outside the United States. Scores on the SAT range from 400 to 1600, combining test results from two 200-to-800-point sections: the Mathematics section and the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section. However, the test is administered under a tight time limit (speeded) to help produce a range of scores.

Who needs a SAT certificate?

The test is intended to assess students' readiness for college. The SAT is typically taken by high school juniors and seniors. The College Board states that the SAT is intended to measure literacy, numeracy and writing skills that are needed for academic success in college. They state that the SAT assesses how well the test-takers analyze and solve problems—skills they learned in school that they will need in college.

SAT vs TOEFL

The SAT is more important. TOEFL's sole point is to determine whether you can function in English at a college. Once you've reached the required threshold, they don't care much and move on to your SAT. Furthermore, SAT scores can bring in scholarship money, whereas TOEFL scores can't.

What is the structure of SAT exam?

The SAT has four sections: Reading, Writing and Language, Math (no calculator), and Math (calculator allowed). The test taker was also optionally able write an essay which, in that case, is the fifth test section. The total time for the scored portion of the SAT is three hours (or three hours and fifty minutes if the optional essay section was taken). Some test takers who are not taking the essay may also have a fifth section, which is used, at least in part, for the pretesting of questions that may appear on future administrations of the SAT. (These questions are not included in the computation of the SAT score.)

Two section scores result from taking the SAT: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, and Math. Section scores are reported on a scale of 200 to 800, and each section score is a multiple of ten. A total score for the SAT is calculated by adding the two section scores, resulting in total scores that range from 400 to 1600. In addition to the two section scores, three "test" scores on a scale of 10 to 40 are reported, one for each of Reading, Writing and Language, and Math, with increment of 1 for Reading / Writing and Language, and 0.5 for Math. There are also two cross-test scores that each range from 10 to 40 points: Analysis in History/Social Studies and Analysis in Science. The essay, if taken, was scored separately from the two section scores. Two people score each essay by each awarding 1 to 4 points in each of three categories: Reading, Analysis, and Writing.

There is no penalty for guessing on the SAT: scores are based on the number of questions answered correctly. The optional essay will not be offered after the June 2021 administration. College Board said it would discontinue the essay section because "there are other ways for students to demonstrate their mastery of essay writing," including the test's reading and writing portion. It also acknowledged that the COVID-19 pandemic had played a role in the change, accelerating 'a process already underway'

Any latest changes in SAT ?

On January 19, 2021, the College Board announced the discontinuation of the optional essay section after June 2021.

SAT Intensive Course

Admission to major colleges and universities is more competitive than ever. Today's high school student has basically three avenues to being accepted by a major college or university: a high GPA, a scholarship based on ability demonstrated in athletics, music, or another specialized area, or a strong SAT score. Many scholarship award committees also look to SAT scores to predict student success in college.

There are different strategies, mindsets and perspectives that you will be required to apply throughout the SAT. You’ll need to be prepared to use your whole brain as far as thinking and assessment is concerned, and you’ll need to do this in a timely manner. This is not something you can learn from taking a course or reading a book, but it is something you can develop through practice and concentration.

Careful preparation, as described in this expert guide, along with hard work, will dramatically enhance your probability of success. In fact, it is wise to apply this philosophy not only to your college applications, but to other elements of your life as well, to raise you above the competition. Your SAT score is one of the areas in the college admission process over which you have a substantial amount of control; this opportunity should not be taken lightly. Hence, a rational, prepared approach to your SAT test as well as the rest of the admission process will contribute considerably to the likelihood of acceptance.

Keep in mind, that although it is possible to take a SAT test more than once, you should never take the test as an “experiment” just to see how well you do. It is of extreme importance that you always be prepared to do your best when taking the SAT. It won’t take you long to discover that the SAT is unlike any test you’ve taken before, and it is probably unlike any test you will ever take again in your academic career. The typical high school or college test is a knowledge-based test. The SAT, however, is skills-based.

The ultimate goal is to learn and express yourself in written and spoken English before you join a university program. For this you need to understand the essential grammar and start using the basic lexical resources.

The Intensive SAT Preparation Course is offered before each testing date. Students will attend a 60 minutes daily session 5 days a week as interactive sessions with the teachers. Zoom-based lectures would be face to face with the teacher and short notes would be provided at the end of every session. The price includes all materials for the course.  A minimum of 7 students must enroll for the course to be offered.  If a course does not meet minimum enrollment, refunds will be issued. Courses will be held online, from teachers' locations worldwide.

Price per course is: $178. Needs-based price reduction and scholarships are available upon request. Documentation of need will be required to qualify. Please note that you must still register for the SAT test itself at www.collegeboard.org. You may contact ieltscounsellor@outlook.com for any specific information in this regard.
